James Gerald Johnson Jr.

If we were to discuss Uncle Gerald Johnson's life, we would start a few months before this picture.  This is a picture of James Gerald Johnson Jr. as a young child.

Gerald was born the 11th of August 1919, in Pomerene, Az. to James Gerald Johnson Sr. and Hazel Eunice Scott.  Pomerene is located in the southern part of Arizona and is 2 miles north of Benson, Arizona.  In the year 2000, Pomerene had a population of 140 people.  Pomerene is a satellite community of Benson.  Gerald's father, James Gerald Sr. was called on a mission for the Mormon church in 1920 when Gerald was just a year old.  Gerald's father would be absent from his life for the next 2 and a half years.  Gerald's mother, Hazel supported him and her missionary husband by taking in ironing.  For part of this time, Gerald and his mother Hazel lived in a tent.  Dora Johnson, Gerald's sister, commented that she felt that because of the mission and her dad being away from home that Gerald developed a closeness to his mother that he did not have with his father.  Gerald Johnson passed away January 1986 and was only 66 years old when he passed away.
These pictures are from his father's Book of Remembrance.
